Alejandro Artigas is a furniture designer whom also is an artist and created this back in 2010.  The composition was of wood, plexiglass, and metal for a finished installation that involved participation of the viewer along with their senses particularly geared toward play….

SENSORIUM: Towards a space of intensity.

Space used as a device which activates or engages the user with new sensations and experiences, thus allowing other body-mind conditions to emerge. A new type of human being can only be achieved through unprecedented spatial experiences.  Places and spaces which recharge the body, the senses, and allow for a utopian moment to materialize. Utopia can only exist if it is to be internalized. These spaces, to be known as Sensoriums, will not deny their artificiality or fabricated nature. Instead of being sacrosanct or essential they will be places one experiences in a short amount of time, as one might experience a coffee or cigarette break, not weekend excursions, but daily respites.

Through the use of reflective and refractive surfaces the user can achieve a level of play. Play is that fundamental yet elusive state of wonderment and amusement which all animals posses. The state of play is not only non representational it eludes signification. Thus you can describe it, and explain it but you cannot replicate it.

Play is a fundamental aspect in today’s world, as it eludes the socio economic barriers  of globalization, and brings us back to a primordial animalistic state. This state does not need to extend beyond a mere instant, an instant which may be extended into more than a moment or remain an immediate experience, thus operating outside the constraints of time.

To perceive is to participate. To participate is to perceive.
